The ISO 50001 in Short

The environment is one of the main topics that businesses have to keep in mind today in order to not seem inconsiderate and insensitive. Having a green profile is extremely important and something that really speaks to consumers at a bigger scale than most marketing tactics. It shows a care for the wider world and the planet we live on. This is why an increasing number of businesses are choosing to implement energy management systems. A survey performed by the British Standards Institute showed that 78% of all companies involved in the research stated that energy management is either important or very important to the company's senior management team. Although most said that the main aim was to reduce cost, they also said that there were real benefits in meeting legal requirements and improving their reputation. However, many of the same companies had no regular audits of their energy management systems.

The ISO, International Organisation for Standardisation, developed the ISO 50001 upon request from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation. The ISO 50001 is a way for companies to keep track of new legislation and regulations, as well as having an annual audit to ensure that all systems are maintained. The standard is internationally recognised and ensures that your business complies with legislations to the country you are considering exporting to or where you are importing from. This will widen the range of your company and allow you to increase earnings. Profits will be increasing due to the savings in energy bills and you will have an overall better flow to the company's energy management systems.

When a company applies for the certification, the first thing that they must do is to perform an energy review. This is a process that is used by ISO certification bodies to establish the baseline for the company, as well as recognising so called ENPIs (Energy Performance Indicators). This will be the first step allowing you to indicate objectives, targets and the move towards creating an action plan for the company. The certification body will require you to measure these elements throughout the year which is why a baseline is crucial and will allow you to see the results more clearly, as well as identifying areas where further improvement is necessary. Once the audit is done and changes are performed, the company will have to conduct an annual audit in order to show that they are still complying with laws and regulations relevant to their sector as well as energy management.
